Jay Peak Resort Wedding | Sally & Phil

Sally and Phil’s Jay Peak Resort wedding felt like a family reunion for me. The summer before the wedding I was lucky enough to shoot their engagement session and hang out with them over a few meals to go over details. But I’ve also known the bride and her family for so long that I can’t count the years. I first met Sally when she was one of the talented soloists for the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association while still in high school. I met Sally’s mom, who was a certified lactation consultant, after my first daughter was born. I later photographed Sally’s sister Martha’s wedding. So I’ve come to know them all pretty well and I have to say that I’m pretty lucky to have a relationship with this family. They are all just wonderful people.

In her sister Emily’s speech, she described Sally as someone who approaches everything with such enthusiasm. The anecdote included a tale of Sally launching straight into a swimming pool as a toddler before her Dad was quite prepared. There couldn’t be a better way to describe her though. Every time I’ve seen Sally she’s just brimming with joy. There is always a smile behind her eyes, even if she’s not smiling.

In Phil I think she found a perfect match because he’s equally positive. He’s so kind and a true gentleman. I’m so fortunate to know this couple.

There was a chilly mist hovering over the mountaintop during the wedding day. It’s hard to predict early June weather in Vermont. But it could have been snowing and I’m sure Sally & Phil would have enjoyed their day just as much. Their schedule was relaxed, there were no details that they stressed over and they really soaked up the time they had with each other and their guests.

This was my first time photographing an event at Jay Peak’s newer outdoor venue. The wedding barn and the tent next to the golf course clubhouse are both awesome rain-or-shine spots.

    Wedding Prep

Prep time was relaxed for both Sally and Phil. I got some of my favorite shots of the day like Phil’s Dad helping with his bowtie and Sally’s Mom helping with her dress. I love discovering some of the tiny details that otherwise go unnoticed. The wedding date was stitched to the cuff of Phil’s shirt and etched into the couple’s wedding bands. Few people probably noticed that Sally’s choice of wedding shoes was an awesomely comfortable pair of Sperrys.

    First Look

The first look was arranged to be at the wedding barn and Phil arrived early to get in place. We aimed for inside since it was still drizzly outside. These two kept me on my toes because Sally arrived ahead of schedule too. I guess these two couldn’t get over their excitement to see each other! They had a very perfect moment with some very beautiful light coming in through the barn door. After they had some time together, we tucked in and out of the barn and ventured briefly into the woods for couple photos. The beautiful bouquet and boutonniere were by Alison of Floral Artistry.  Sally and Phil transformed the chill and the mist into one of the most luminous sessions I’ve photographed just with the intensity of their glow.

    Group Portraits

Here’s a few of the fun wedding party portraits we captured before the ceremony. Everyone was so on schedule that we were able to relax and have some fun!

    Waiting

As we waited for the ceremony start time I captured a few details in the reception tent, candids of family waiting, and another fun shot of Sally and Phil enjoying a little down time together. The sun even appeared briefly in a very dramatic sky.

    The Ceremony

At last it was time, and guest filed into the barn for a short but oh so sweet ceremony.

    The Reception

The dances, the speeches, the mingling were all filled with such joy, both lighthearted and deeply meaningful. It was the perfect balance.

People danced. People laughed. Each and every guest was truly present and a real part of this awesome day. It couldn’t have been better for these two. I absolutely wish Sally and Phil the very best and a lifetime of happiness.
